George VanOrden Store
George's art consists of woodworking items built 100% from dead timber found on his property. George locates dead trees and sections them into workable length logs; he then uses his small sawmill to cut the logs into lumber; the boards are then dried in a solar kiln for at least a month before they are ready to use. Some art pieces come from lumber from a fallen barn on George's property. He also has an old farmhouse that provides material for his art. Both the barn and farmhouse are pre-civil war era buildings. George VanOrden served nearly 22 years in the Marine Corps and retired in December of 2003. During his career, he served as a Mountain Warfare Instructor, Drill Instructor, Recon Instructor and Range Officer. A graduate of Airborne school, military SCUBA school and numerous other training courses, George specialized in demolition, explosives and landmine warfare. George is a 4th generation Marine, and is originally from Fulks Run, Va. He lives on the property his ancestors have passed down for nearly 200 years, and is married with 3 grown children. After serving around the world in chaotic environments, George enjoys creating art from re-purposed lumber and lumber he has harvested from dead trees on his property.
